junk in the trunk

So i went to the post office and asked about mail dropping packages and the man wasn't very helpful. Before I leave AR I am going to get into contact with a more knowledgeable postmaster (someone from an office on the route) to get a little better info on how to send packages (hint wink cough).

Unlike some of the other travelers I am accompanying I would bring the kitchen sink with me on the trip, so its been hard for me to get my gear down to something I think I can manage. There is something reassuring to me knowing I have too much stuff, and won't lack for much. The flipside of that coin is that in the first few weeks I might be trashing some of the contents of my bag. Whatever.

Heres rundown of all my gear that I am carrying. Only thing that is not pictured that will be carried is food, and some contents of the bag that straps to my handle bars.

Clothing

and voila its in a bag!

And now for the rest of the story.

clockwise from purple bag of clothing: shoes, tool bag (gray bag) and pot scrubber sitting on pants, sleeping bag, fuel, stove, towels, matress pad, h20 bag , dop kit, rain gear, hi-visibility vest & rain fly/mosquitenetting (blue bag).

Here is a picture of me in my BOB bag, the sack all of this equipment travels in. Mind you i am 6 ft tall and pushing 185lbs

and last but not least my trailer and bike

The bag on the seat would normally be attached to my handle bars.

That is all I can muster for now.

Trial and Error

Hello all and welcome to my (our?) blog about traveling across the country on bikes. Ideally in the future you will be able to drop by the site and see what we have been up to, and where we are headed. I will be posting a list of mail drop sites for anyone that is gracious enough to send us goodies on our trip.

Mail Drop-the act of sending items ahead of you current position, post marked general delivery, to be picked up upon arrival to the town. Allow for easy resupplies and access to things that might be unavailable to you otherwise. I will make another post this week with specific directions for anyone that is interested in doing this for us .

Blast off day is Monday June 6th, leaving from portland maine and headed to portland oregon. Stay tuned for more information and updates about the journey.
